Pink Lake In Fars Province

Maharloo salt lake is located in southeast of Shiraz in the hillsides of Zagros mountain range and it is famous for its pink and red colors. The reason for the lake’s pink color is a kind of red-colored algae. There are two seasonal rivers which provide water for this lake during autumn and winter. By mid-summer and due to high evaporation rates and salt concentrations, the lake water turns pinkish red, in the last years the water in this region has become saltier which has led to a dramatic increase in the number of this kind of algae. The depth of Maharloo Lake comes down to 3 meters in some parts but it is worth mentioning that because of the seaweed covering the surface of the lake and its extremely salty water there are no living creatures in this pink lake.

Maharloo Lake Today

Unfortunately this magical salt lake, which provides about 90 percent of the salt usage of Shiraz, is drying out. Maharloo Lake is considered a suitable and valuable habitat to various kinds of migratory birds such as storks, flamingoes and ducks.
